Evangelicals rebranding themselves

This Christianity magazine editorial by John Buckeridge is interesting if you are an observer of church goings-on in the UK. I found it via the Ekklesia article ‘Evangelicals urged to drop the ‘e’ word‘.

It is certainly true that Evangelicals in the UK are different beasts to Evangelicals in the USA. (I am not saying that either are beasts. It is a figure of speech.) Well done to John Buckeridge for raising this thorny issue.

As an aside, you might remember that I wrote about the Evangelical Alliance in a post entitled Christian Unity a month or so back. I was saying something along the lines of ‘Shouldn’t all Christians work together, not just Evangelicals?’ Well, I had a very nice e-mail and letter back, which I don’t think I mentioned here on the blog. And it seems to me that since the last time I looked the Alltogether page on the EA website does seem to read a bit more inclusively. Marvellous.

Update: Discussion on John Buckeridge’s article is taking place on Jonny Baker’s site and Tall Skinny Kiwi’s too.

I went to Spring Harvest last week (first time) and I was really impressed with the amount of honest debate the EA has been entering into about, well, stuff. Respectfully debating the basic basics of the gospel. Really impressive.

I have to say ‘ditto’ to John Buckeridge’s article – it’s a concern and frustration I’ve felt for a while. I’ve described myself (reluctantly, and on those occassions where someone wants to squeeze me into a particular Christian box) as ‘an evangelical with grace, I hope’ as it seems to me that it is often grace that’s lacking in evangelicals. But even then I don’t particularly want to be labelled – other than as a part of the body of Christ – which, we seem to forget too easily, is made up of many different parts.
