Telephone cartoon

telephone cartoon

I was going to draw something poignant about this modern world we have created for ourselves, but came up with this instead. I thought about adding it to We Blog Cartoons, my cartoons for bloggers site, but thought better of it as it isn’t quite up to the mark. It might however come in useful for retiring telecommunications executives called upon to do one last lecture on ‘The Industry as I have known it’.

As an aside, John asked about my recent trip to Southend to meet the government:

I’m more interested to know what the government was doing in Southend. All out on a day trip from the House? Was the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries sampling cockles at Leigh-on-Sea?

Nearly. I actually went to a seminar run by the local branch of the government entitled ‘How to fill in forms’. The first session was on the old way using pen and paper. Then after coffee the modern methods using a computer were brought to our attention. It was attended by two retired nautical gentlemen and me. [And me? And I? Help me out pedants!] It seemed odd that only the three of us were invited, but I suppose cartoonists are not known for their administrative abilities and filling in forms at sea is tricky owing to the movement of the waves, tides etc.

Me, I or myself maybe? Try the sentence without other people in it. If you would say ‘me’ then you use ‘me’. If you would say ‘I’ then use ‘I’. I don’t know how it works with your sentence…

  2. St says:

Advice is above is bang on. So without the other members of the party it would read…

    It was attended by me.

    And that is correct.

  3. Paul says:

If in doubt you can always refer to yourself in the third person like Alan Shearer used to do.

“It was attended by two retired nautical gentlemen and celebrated cartoonist, Dave Walker”.

  4. Sam says:

I’d concur heartily (ar, me hearties…) with the above. Though personally I’d feel more inclined to go for ‘myself’ than ‘me’.

As for the cartoon, it made me chuckle audibly, so I think it is a very good one. The people drawings could possibly be a little clearer, but the idea is excellent.

  5. Dave says:

Thank you. I think ‘myself’ sounds wrong.

    I did it myself. :)
It was attended by myself. :(

I am pleased that my blog is read by people who are interested in grammar. But does anyone read the blog who is interested in telecommunications? Let’s talk about telecommunications. Aren’t telecommunications great.

  6. Nicthevic says:

Aren’t blogs great? They’re telecommunication. I think. At least – they’re communication…aren’t they? What did we do before we did blogs? I’m trying to imagine the cartoon drawn with blogging as “these days”

  7. Nefertiki says:

Certainly I am interested in telecommunication, but I am primarily interested in it only if I can use it the way I use a light switch, i.e. without actually knowing what makes what do what.

As for the quality of the drawing, there’s nothing at all wrong with the people, they are quite clear, what they are doing is clear and their gender is also plain enough to see that they are of opposite gender and not too plain to make one say, Thank you, I have seen quite enough. Very good cartoon and a clear rendering of these and those. Chuckles here too.
