Things that are making me angry this morning

wrath

All over the world people are reading this headline in their feedreaders and thinking ‘Oooh great – some things that are making Dave angry. I wonder what they are.’ So, in no particular order:

1) Natwest
My bank have charged me £171 in one week in charges. All because I am incompetent. To be fair I have phoned up and they have halved this, but I still feel obliged to tell the world so that those of you who, like me, are administrationally challenged will remember that your bank is your enemy, not your friend. They prey on the stupid and those who suffer from chronic ineptitude, of whom I am a prime example.

2) The Firefox web browser
I spent the best part of a good long while this morning composing what was probably the best blog post ever to be uploaded to the internet. Then suddenly I get the dreaded ‘Firefox has experienced a problem and we are not going to save anything you have written’ window and it is all lost. Yes, I have all the updates and latest versions and patches and upgrades and service packs and ‘anti this and thats’ known to humankind. And yes, I am going to keep using Firefox because I like it, but I feel that the world should know that life with Firefox is not plain sailing. It is like sailing on a day with not much wind when there are a lot of midges and you have forgotten the sandwiches.

    Bother bother bother.

I think that there should be a degree in “All the stuff you parents really can’t teach you about” which includes a year on tax, a year on national insurance and a year on how to fill out millions of forms which mean nothing to you.

  2. Ray Booysen says:

I hate Natwest. They charge you whenever they feel fit. For example, 5 months of no monthly charges (I have an account that charges £10/month), then as soon as my balance is at £49.99, they’ll put through the full 5 months worth, put me into overdraft and then charge me overdraft fees.!!! AAAAH.

In other words, I understand fully, comiserate (spelling) and hope for my cartoons. :)

Can’t help on Number 1- I am equally inept… my only solution was to marry someone not quite so inept as me! Number 2 however is easy… Get Ecto! http://ecto.kung-foo.tv/ … problem solved!

I empathise totally – the same thing happened to me this week! The bank were completely unmoved by my protestations that I hadn’t been kept informed of the changes in their ‘penalties’ system (and thus incurred penalties)… so I came off the phone and had a bluddy good cry.

And tomorrow they’re going to take a hefty sum off my already pathetic balance and add it to their Gigantic Profit Mountain of Doom. And stand on top of it, laughing and pointing, no doubt.

Dave, those are very bad things to happen to a gifted young cartoonist. (There, feel any better?) I, too, agree with you and also suffer because of my ineptitude. Ineptitude seems bad enough to suffer from without being penalized for it. And talk about corporate monsters — I once fell down some awkward steps while leaving Bank of America, something cracked painfully, and they still haven’t said ‘sorry’!

As for midges, they are a curse, as I experienced once in Donegal when they would not permit me to eat my tea and cake by the lakeside.

I have also just blogged on this very subject.

In my story NatWest decided to bounce a cheque to a third party and charge me something like £35 for it and then ON THE SAME DAY pay a Direct Debit (for a Nat West loan) which put me further into overdraft thus enabling them to immedietly collect further exorbetant (sp?) charges putting me further into overdraft so that the money I had put into the account to cover the cheque was eaten up so that it bounced again so they could charge me another £35 etc, etc.

Nearly £200 bank charges in one week caused me to think “There must be another way” and so I switched to a different bank with a much fairer charging policy, an interest rate on agreed borrowing which is less than half the Nat West rate and a funky black guy with dodgy glasses in their TV adverts.

Strangly enough I have found it much easier to control my finances now I am with a bank which does not continually remove money from my account at the drop of a hat.
