Announcement sort of thing

ten pounds well spent I think

Last week Ch (who some of you will know on the internet as ‘Maddie’) and I went to Canterbury Cathedral. We had a little bit of a look around, and then got engaged.

We’re thinking that we might get married in the summer, so I may take a day off the blogging if that’s ok with everyone. Perhaps two days, who knows.

I’ve been told that everyone likes to give advice about weddings, but that 75% of it can be ignored. Please do feel free to leave advice in the comments along with a note indicating whether yours falls into the 75% or the 25%.

Please note: If your comment doesn’t show up straight away don’t fret. The system automatically moderates some new commenters and those who look a little shifty. It will appear shortly.

  10. Jen says:

    Congratulations!!!!! Wow! Thats exciting! :D – 25%

But, how on earth are we going to cope without you blogging for 1 or 2 days! I mean, its just not on! – 75%

  11. Neil says:

    Congratulations!!!

£10 seems a good deal for a trip around a cathedral and an engagement thrown in, although I think I would have tried to negotiate a cream tea in the refectory for that price.

  12. Ruth says:

Congratulations!!!! Sounds like a really exciting time!

I have no advice but couldn’t help noticing how as a guy there’s no details besides the location, whereas girls go into details about how, when, where, what etc. Just an odd thought.

But all the best in getting ready for the big day!

  13. Lemly says:

Woohoo! That’s made my day :D Congratulations to you both.

  14. Youthblog says:

    Congratulations …. fab news.
I think we should organise a bit of a collection of ‘blog posts’ in your stylee (if that’s possible) thus allowing you 2 weeks off and us still to have good stuff to read every day :-)

PS Seeing as you got engaged at Canterbury Cathedral, I assume you’ll be marrying there too?

  15. yay says:

Hurrah!! Congratulations and loads of Yay and much hurrahing and general hooha!

  16. John says:

    My advice is

“Never let the sun go down on your wreath.”

YAHOOOO (and no, i don’t mean the search engine, i know how you computer people’s minds work ;-)

that’s ablsolutely extrasuperfantabulous! wow i’m so excited! has there ever been a wibwedding before?

you only ever need one piece of advice for a wedding: ignore all advice (except this piece ;-) and what everyone wants you to do except what you want *you* to do and have exactly what *you* want. it’s the one day of your life you get to be well and truly selfish without guilt, so enjoy it.

  22. Jack the Lass says:

That’s so fantastic – I’m so so happy for you both.

Does this mean I may have to find another hat? You know the hassles I had last time.

  23. Simo says:

Fantastic news, really pleased for you both.

My advice start practicing taking your socks off with out turning them inside out now, after 8 years I still get told off even when I do the washing! 25%

  24. Paul says:

    good work son!!

  25. Kathryn says:

    EXCELLENT!
Lots of happiness to both of you…
I’m presuming that the Cathedral passed muster as a suitable venue?

  26. Olive Morgan says:

Congratulations indeed! Make the most of your engagement and may your marriage last as long as ours did -58 years. “Never let the sun go down on your wrath” is in the 75% we were often told. The 25% we were never told but I offer to you is that you will both need to keep close to Jesus in order not to let the sun go down on your wrath. We tried it with and without Jesus at times so i can vouch for it.

  27. blonde says:

Yay, congrats :) :) :) that’s stonking news I’m so pleased for you both. A wibwedding?! cooool! Never been married so any advice I might give entirely unfounded. Enjoy enjoy enjoy! and big hugs from alice&benjamin xx

  28. chalky says:

brilliant!! congrats etc. i think some people might have already said that. hurrah (that too no doubt…!)

Great news! Congratulations to you both!

  31. Jacqui says:

Everyone else has already said this before and better, but many, many congratulations to you both. :D

  32. Simon says:

Fantastic news – many congratulations to you both. Advice – it’s your day – do what you want to do and not what you think other people might want you to do…

I’d put that in the 25% category!

  33. Wood says:

Congratulations to the both of you! Hurrah!

  34. Chas says:

Congratulations. And this comment is an advice-free zone.

  35. Serena says:

    Many many many congratulations!

There are four words there, please take whichever one you like as your 25%. I think the first “many” looks nice.

  36. Sarah H says:

Hurrah! Congratulations and welcome to the club!

75%’s worth – buy a big purple giraffe to make the wedding breakfast venue really distinctive
    25%’s worth – remember it’s YOUR DAY

(Also congrats for getting your cartoon in the DOOR!!)

  37. Johann says:

    Wonderful, wonderful news!!

Let your parents plan the wedding – 75%

Read words of Paul in Ephesians ch 4.32-ch 5.2 – 25%

  38. Smudgie says:

What a coincidence! I was just reading on the wibsite and someone there called Maddie has just got engaged too. These things always seem to happen in twos.

Fantastic news – only surprised it hasn’t happened sooner. Congratulations to you both. I hope it all goes smoothly and you’re ecstatically happy. God bless you both.

  39. Kyle says:

    Congratulations!

Have a wedding planner, or put somebody in charge of directing things on the day of – so that parents and grandparents can’t suddenly take over the show and upset the bride or groom: 25%.

I saw a mother and grandmother reduce both the bride and groom to tears because of that…

  40. Andy says:

Never posted a comment to your blog before, even though I’ve been reading it for some months.

Congratulations! I think you should have got engaged when you went to the secret bunker, so if she said no, you could prevent the news getting out…

Anyway, I know one blogger who has a pre-written emergency archive of posts that automatically appear one-per-day if he is away. So my advice is to spend the months leading up to the wedding coding an automatic blog poster – 75%

  41. Tired&emotional says:

Are you both mad?? Take it from one who’s taken this leap in the past 12 months….. you will not live to regret it.

May best advice is to let everyone else do the running around on the day. It’ll go very, very quickly, so you need to take time to remember as much as you can. The photos will seem to last forever, so don’t be afraid to say “Stop” when you need to. 25%

  42. deborah says:

Congratulations and felicitations and huzzah :)

The only advice I can proffer is “remember it’s your day and do what you want to do.”

  43. Dave says:

Thanks for all the kind comments and best wishes everyone. They are very much appreciated.

  44. Kathryn says:

    Yay!

Brilliant news dave, congrats to you both!

The best advice I was given on my wedding day was to take time every now and then to observe and remember, kinda ‘mental snaapshots.’

And also, don’t wear frosted lipstick. I know, you’re disappointed already!

  45. Karin says:

    Congratulations to you both.

As my father-in-law said to hubby when he announced our engagement *& years ago, “about time”. ;0)

  46. TJ says:

    Congratulations to you both.

Enjoy the beginning of the rest of your life – 25%
Panic about how much your life will change – 75%

  47. Nefertiki says:

Marvellous news, Dave, and you picked a great way to announce it, I mean on this site. Almost as nice as an announcement in sky writing. (I’ll still keep glancing up at the sky occasionally.) I also plan to have the announcement printed in the Hudson Valley Agronomists Weekly and the Bow Hunters Gazette, so please fax all needed information to me ASAP c/o Iron Horse Pub. It’s right next to the railroad tracks; I can be found there Wed., Thurs., Sat. 2-6 PM. They take messages for steady customers.

Nessa writes, …”have exactly what *you* want. it’s the one day of your life you get to be well and truly selfish without guilt, so enjoy it.” I simply cannot agree with that. You should be happy on the great day, of course, but only if you realize that keeping Maddie happy is the only path to your happiness. 100%

Have you noticed that I only gave you one small but vital bit of advice? I just want to let you know that I am always available for words of wisdom at your convenience.

I hope the time of your engagement is heavenly. But cutting back on blogging is going too far.

  48. Nefertiki says:

Dave, I have to post again just in case you and the future Mrs Dave wonder whether it’s really appropriate for an announcement to be placed in Hudson Valley periodicals. Of course it is; remember, you have kith, if not kin, in these parts.

Also, if it’s not asking too much, in case the wedding trip takes you to exotic climes, could you keep an eye open for Pastor Danny and let us know how his mission is going?

  49. Dith says:

It seems only fair to say ‘congrats’ to you as well as to your wife-to-be. So

    CONGRATS!

As for advice, as someone said to me before we got married, you WILL upset someone. I was a little daunted by the seeming inevitability of this comment at the time but, when the offence was caused, it was kind of encouraging in a sort of ‘Ah well, I was warned’ kind of way. (75%/25% – you choose!)

Most importantly, enjoy the day and the life that follows.

  50. fishsoup says:

    Congratulations!

Now here’s my advice. Do NOT try and make gingerbread men for everyone who attends your nuptials and ice their name on them. You will smell of gingerbread for weeks and never be able to touch it again.

Seriously though, that’s fab. God bless you both
    fishsoup and Mr fishsoup!

  51. Liz says:

    Excellent news!

    Congrats to you both.

  52. Jack the Lass says:

fishsoup, I know I’ve only met you once, but can I say that I was completely unsurprised by your advice :D

Nefertiki, should I ever be in need of nuptial advice (chance would be a fine thing), you shall be my first port of call.

  53. Nelly says:

Oh boy oh boy oh boy- I’m so CAPSLOCK HAPPY for you guys!

  54. Ian says:

    CONGRATULATIONS!

God grant you both many, many years!

[I only just got back online, hence the delay!]

  55. Chops says:

    Mucho Congrats.

My Advice is don’t contract Glandular Fever three weeks before your Wedding it is not as cool as it sounds. 25%

  56. Chorister says:

    I thought you’d been married for ages….
    Many Congratulations!

Note by the date of writing this how long it took me to discover it.
