New winter Olympic sports

We’ve been watching a variety of Olympic sports over the last couple of days. Included in their number have been the Nordic combined, where they have to do a ski jump followed by a cross country course, and then the Biathlon, a mixture of skiing with the occasional stopping to shoot at something.

There do seem to be quite a a variety of sports already, but I thought that in future they might want to add some more. In case the organisers have surfed in and want some ideas here are mine:

Cross country skiing with a bit of a break
Skiers set off on a gently undulating course. They then stop for a hot chocolate and a cookie. After drinking their hot chocolate and eating their cookie they continue with the skiing until the finish line. Marks are awarded for speed of skiing but also for manners and washing up their mug properly etc.

Snowboarding and knocking down snowmen
This involves snowboarding and knocking down snowmen. I haven’t worked out all the practical details yet.

Uphill Luge
Participants have to get up a step icy slope using a small wooden sled. Obviously this would need to be tested first to see if it is possible and there would need to be rules against cheating etc.

Please put your suggestions in the comments. Please bear in mind that Olympic Committee members who search for “New winter Olympic sports” in the future may well stumble across this site, so no rubbish ones please. After all, it is you and I who will have to watch them.

    Olympic Shivering.

And as an antidote, the “Who can wear the most layers” event.

What about “Emergency Shopping”? You wait for 2 inches of snow to fall, then you have to make your way to the expensive corner shop, then panic-buy their complete stock of milk, bread and potatoes, and carry it home. Points can be awarded for the least appropriate footwear and clothing. Additional marks are available for all those that manage to consume the extra food they’ve bought before it either goes fof, or the snow melts and you can get to Tescos again.

I think Britain might win a mdeal or two in this.

I wish I could edit that last comment and spell “medal” correctly….

How about snowball fights. Hamas v Israel. Iraqi insurgents v USA…you get the picture

Uphill Luge is a splendid entry as an Olympic event. But while I can see the value of an icy slope in making it more competitive, I am totally against making it a step slope. Why load the dice against the players in an already difficult sport?

If I ever try to go for the gold it would be as a member of a three person luge team (not uphill.) Not the driver who must focus on the course unblinkingly, not the one in the rear who must push the loaded luge while running and then jump on fast. I’ll be the one in the middle hanging on for dear life and screaming her head off.

    Dave, you are a genius!

My vote would be human curling – sliding people sitting down along the ice instead of little stones!
