Danish cartoons (continued)

This story continues to become more complex. I’m still of the opinion that it was wrong for the cartoons to be initially published. To my mind this has nothing to do with free speech and everything to do with respect for ones fellow human beings. However, in the light of the fact the cartoons were published in Egypt without incident before any of the re-prints in Europe it is becoming increasingly clear that militant groups and the governments of certain countries have been largely responsible for stirring up feeling over the issue (As an aside – Quite why no UK papers seem to have reported on this I don’t quite know, as the information was fairly widely mentioned in various blogs yesterday).

Meanwhile a UK Christian website is trying to collect attempting to collect cartoons ‘showing how people of all nations and faiths can live in peace’. When asked upon a cartoonists forum nobody could think of anything they had done that fitted the bill, but I have, after some contemplation, come up with a contribution of sorts:

perfect harmony

You can see a larger version here. I’ve made the cartoon available for subscribers to reprint (info) should any of you/them wish to promote world peace in this way.

Update: The Good News has posted their first positive peace-promoting cartoon.

I find it amusing that churches try and spread peace when at the same time most of them insist on using the organ in services – an instrument hardly noted for its subtle sound.

I can get away with say that because I am a church-going organist hardly known for producing a subtle sound when I play.

I’d like to make it clear that this blog does not condone any acts of violence involving church organs. Thank you.

Hi Ben and welcome by the way :)

I’m trying to work out what the music is. Is it either – Make me a channel of your peace – or -Onward Christian soldiers -? :)

As a moderate Muslim, I thank you for keeping that opinion and spreading it. I’m agaisnt the violent protests just as much as I’m against the blasphemous decision to call for such cartoons and publish them. Democracy is not just about freedom, it involves a certain amount of force necessary to keep going. You can’t abuse the judiciary and get away with it in the name of freedom now, can you? What I find appalling is that Jyllands Posten refused to publish a cartoon of Jesus 3 years ago, on grounds that (i quote the same editor) “it would provoke some people, not much but some”. And might I add that the cartoonist had shown that cartoon to a few pastors who found it funny. (Find info about the Jesus cartoon on http://www.guardian.co.uk/international/story/0,,1703501,00.html )

As Rusty says, “If they don’t stop depicting us as a bunch of crazed, violent fanatics, I am going to blow something up!”

  6. Ben says:

It’s quite compatible to say it’s wrong to do X (e.g. publish cartoons causing offence) and that someone has a right to do X.

If 100 years ago some newspaper had published pictures of [Post edited] , that would have been the demise of that newspaper. I cannot even imagine the outrage. However that was then , now we have a watered down secularized populace which believes in nothing and tolerates everything. Muslims don’t seem as advanced as our apathetic, valueless, crowd. Like the Buddist monks that set themselves on fire in Saigon to protest the government, they will die for what they believe is right.I don’t condone any violence, how about showing some respect towards people’s religions. Do you nutcases have to irk every Muslim in the world? What’s the matter with people, they can’t think?
