What is that funny orange box over on the right there?

Observers who have been observing may begin to notice a little orange boxy thing with rounded whathaveyous appearing in the right hand sidebar of the blog. I suspect some of you are wondering what it is and if I do not explain it soon no doubt sleepless nights will follow.

It is the symbol for what is know as the ‘feed’ for this blog. If you click it you will be taken to a page which allows you to ’subscribe’ to the Cartoon Blog using all manner of different ‘feed reading’ sites and programmes. These include things like:

But why bother with all this? Well, the idea is that using one of these feed-reading sites or programmes can make it much quicker to look at all your favourite websites, blogs, news sites and podcasts. You can do it all in one go without having to go and visit each site in turn, which means you have more time to do other things, like go out for a walk in the darkness, mist and rain.

So go on – click it now and see what happens.

The orange thingy is due to put in an appearance on Internet Explorer 7 shortly according to the MS IE7 blog.

I’ve recently discovered another online feed reader called Rojo. I prefer it over Bloglines and Google Reader, both of which I’ve used for extended periods of time… it’s good to have a choice but keep this one in mind!

Anyway, just to prove I’m not a spambot, I’ve been following this blog via RSS for several months through all three of those readers – it’s definitely a good way of staying on top of things.

I actually use a programme called desktop sidebar, you need a fairly high screen resolution if you have it permanently on top, otherwise you can hide it like the windows task bar and it will pop up when you move near to where it is docked. It has many features including whether, outlook info, performance info and a blog roll facility, when it flags up a new post I can just click it and it will bring up the relevant page, with firefox I can then open all relevant one in tabs, it works great!

    Simo …

    U’re just too clever!

I use bloglines too Dave. V cool. V simple.

  5. Nefertiki says:

Sarah’s just about said it all, but I will repeat anyway: I use bloglines too and this is the place where I was led to it. It is very thoughtful and clever of you to anticipate what we might like or need to know and promptly provide it!

Thank you for the simple explanation–I’m sending all my questioners to you! Love the funny orange box. BTW I use bloglines too. SL
