Newspaper plant pots and their problems

Hippy Shopper (which also talks about things like fairtrade clothes and organic beer) is reporting that a device has been invented to turn newspapers into plant pots.

More proof that you don’t have to be Charlie Dimmock to get your fingers muddy – a genius little widget that makes old newspapers into new plant pots. You wrap the paper around the post, push it into the base… et voila! One free seedling pot.

I am all for innovation, recycling and cutting global plant pot numbers by 12% by 2015, but surely the newspaper will go all soggy when you water the plant.

If anyone has tried pouring water into a newspaper cup and can report back as to the results I would be most interested to find out what happened. Who knows, perhaps we can cut china mug numbers by 12% as well using the same technology.

But for seedlings they are ideal, I am sure will survive a few waterings, and then you can plant them straight out without risking damage to the plant by trying to get it out of a pot.

I have made cups from newspaper and other papers and they will hold liquid for several minutes just with a single layer however it is best not used for hot drinks! I also have to add that the ink does tend to ruin the drink rather quickly so if you are going to try this find a newspaper that uses waterproof ink! If you would like instructions for making such a cup I’m sure I could provide them for you.

Marvellous – I’m being proved wrong. Roll on the plantpotless society!

  4. Rob says:

An old teacher of mine had a trick whereby he made a “kettle” from newspaper, and boiled water in it. He used a bunsen burner and a beaker stand to hold the kettle while it heated.

I have one of these wooden “turn newspapers into potplants”-thingys and the pots do last remarkably well. In fact, some of them were so sturdy last season that I had to rip them off when planting out so that the roots could get out!
