Moorlands College

I went to Moorlands college. Simo (the one with the double decker) has been remembering that he did too, as has Ian, though he only went there for lunch. I did a quick search around and could only find one current Moorlands student blog, that of Sarah D. Hello Sarah D.

It brings up mixed feelings looking back. I wasn’t entirely well for some of my time there and struggled with some aspects of college life, but I do look back at those two years with some fondness. I miss a lot of things – the friendships being the main one. It was where I started drawing cartoons and although most of what I did was rubbish people did seem to like them. I think though that the grass always looks greener in the rear view mirror.

If anyone from Moorlands (past or present) is reading do say hello in the comments. Are there any other Moorlands bloggers? Surely there must be.

I spend 2 weeks there, and did a youthwork course through them, but you of course know that already. Can’t say I liked the place, sorry.

I’m at Moorlands at the moment, in my second year of three, doing the applied theology degree.

It’s great to see some graduates doing something creative with their time; I like what I’ve seen so far of your site! I agree with you about the struggle of college life. Being out in the countryside makes life sometimes feel a bit isolated and the place can get a bit insular. But I suppose that is a trait of the church in this country as a whole and cannot be (at least, in too specific a way) a downfall of the college.

We’re growing, with bigger intakes than ever before. My yeargroup is 55 in total I think, including the new placement-based students who study one day a week and work the rest in local churches.

Staff are great, quite a few new ones recently (three new Scots on faculty – odd for Dorset!). Don’t know what else to tell you really. God’s doing some great things in the lives of people who make themselves available to him. Oh, and we’re building new blocks with en-suite rooms, very posh.

Well, that’s it I guess. Pop in for lunch if you’re ever in the area, we’d be glad to have you.

Hi Tom – welcome. I’m impressed you picked up on this post so quickly. Thanks for insights into current happenings at Moorlands. I’m not sure how many people there now will know me, but feel free to encourage some more Moorlandites to come and say hello. Yes, I’d like to pop in for lunch one day.

  4. Emily says:

hi Dave, I’m also at Moorlands….level 3 on the community and family course.

I’m not going to write as much Tom though.
Wen were you here at Moorlands?
I’m also a bit of an artist….. but not so good on the cartoon stuff.

I do the prayer sheets for college, can I include some of your cartoons on there?

    Emily

Hello there – it’s Sarah D here! Tom just told me I had a mention on your blog so I had to come and visit and check it out…. You know I’m not sure why I’m the only moorlander to have a blog but I will pass on the joy of blogging and try and encourage some more moorlands blogs!

I’m a 3rd year – youth and community course – have loved it here but am ready to go out into the big wide world now…. bring it on that’s what I say!

    Happy blogging!
    Sarah D :)

This is great. Real live Moorlands people posting comments – fantastic.

Hi Emily and welcome. I was at Moorlands from 1995-1997. Dear me, what a long time ago. I’ll send you an e-mail about the cartoons.

Sarah – hello! Yes, do tell them about the joys of blogging. In fact you should really be talking about it in some session about communicating with people. Whos in charge of that? Dave Edwins perhaps? Tell him I’ll come and do a lecture on blogging and how it can help the church.

  7. Sarah D says:

Umm I dunno who’s in charge of communication – first year was such a long time a go..(he he!) Edwins would be a good contact I guess – he’d be able to tell you who to talk to…big it up for bloggs!

Well, I am an ‘old’ Moorlands grad – from 1979 – go on, tell me you weren’t born then!!!! It is amazing to see links like this. We have ALWAYS had a heart for the college and the grads. Our son is second generation Moorlands, so it is still a special place for us. WE have seen lots of changes and have loads of good memories.- bet you didn’t turn the principles office into a jungle or kidnap the evangelism lecturer….oh dear I am reminiscing..I had better stop!!!!!

  9. Colette says:

Dear Dave, I’ve really been enjoying your cartoons in the ‘Church Times’ – torn out quite a few to put on my noticeboard. Thanks for all those. But didn’t have any idea you were a Moorlands grad til just now. I was there 88-91, now a Vicar in Liverpool, who’s just had a Moorlands student on placement with me! V. grateful for time at College, even tho’ not always easy. Deep friendships, God at work, some inspirational staff, and eye-mind-heart opening study. Keep up the good work and God bless, Colette
