Dave Walker

Some might say I lead a sad life. But in fact trying to make a living doing drawings means that it is quite important to be able to find myself on Google. My theory is that if the person you are looking for doesn’t appear on the front page then most people will give up and go and put the kettle on or something. And I do rather need people to buy cartoons and licences and commission work and suchlike, so they need to be able to find me.

I was disappointed to find that, besides the ever present Dave ‘Concrete Garages and Sectional Buildings’ Walker (I am not linking to any of these by the way) and six or seven other Dave Walkers I have now been overtaken by David Walker, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Morfe ward on Bridgnorth Town Council and Bridgnorth District Council, with his snappy “Cllr David Walker :: Working for you all year round!” slogan. Hey everyone, I can work for you all year round! But if you read his site it is all ‘More disarray looming for Conservatives’ and ‘Quatford Speed Limit to be reduced’ - interesting as it is certainly not worthy of a higher ranking then me.

Anyway, in an attempt to bolster my position on the page I have produced a snappy slogan: ‘Cartoonist Dave Walker: Working for you all year round (Excepting weekends and Bank holidays) drawing cartoons with a church, Christian or religious slant and also some other ones as and when the ideas come to me.’

Update: Thanks to Neil, who has been chanting my name in a mantra-like fashion in the comments and to Simon, Kyle and Richard who have bestowed great linkage upon my cause.

I’ve just tried googling my name, and I come second (it is an unusual name). What is annoying though, is that I’m beaten by a gallery of helmets!

  2. Neil says:

I think the most helpful thing I can say here is Dave Walker (repeat 20 times)

[Neil - I edited your comment as it might appear to a search engine that I’m trying to spam them, and they don’t like that…]

  3. Dave says:

Moog. I had a joke about ‘taking it on the chin’ but couldn’t quite make it work.

Neil - thank you. If you need some help ousting the photographer from the top of your Google page let me know.

  4. Kyle (Captain Sacrament) says:

Hey, I’ll try to do my part.

  5. Simo says:

Dave Walker, I have to say that Dave Walkers Cartoon Church Site and Cartoon Blog are probably some of the best features of the web. Therefore Dave Walker definitely should be at the top of the page on Google, after all I Simon Faulks of www.notashamed.co.uk/onmebus get second place only to be knocked off by my namesake from leister and he is a good chap anyway and produces some great blues music!

  6. blonde says:

I was fourth, on an article I wrote a couple of years ago for SCM, after 3 about a ballet dancer with my name.

  7. blonde says:

How do google do the ratings then? if we all link to you lots will you climb back up the page? do my best…

  8. Richard Hall says:

    Links are the thing, blonde.
    I’ve done my little bit…

  9. Neil says:

Ah yes, that damn Neil Denham photographer guy, who does he thing he is, some kind of professional?

  10. Simo says:

Dave, although we don’t seam to have pushed you up the ratings under your own name yet, (I shall add an extra link on my blog) you have now reached the top of page 2 under my name!

  11. Dave says:

Simo - yes, that is odd. It usually takes a few days to kick in. If you put the term ‘train seats’ into google you’ll notice that the post two before this one has been indexed so hopefully this one will follow shortly.

  12. Cllr David Walker says:

The residents I represent might argue that is quite important for them to get hold of me too! As a free lance web designer I happen to think a good rank is important for my income. If you want a higher rank don’t forget it is not just about links to your page, you also need to get the word count right. Get the right key words in the right places then you will get a better ranking. Don’t blame me for where your site gets ranked.

    I like your site.

    Regards,
    Dave.

Dave, I agree with you that a snappy slogan may go a long way towards achieving success. But I do not think that the one you suggested is snappy enough. How about: Dave Walker — keeps tickling you [or, your funny bone] all year round. Or: The Cartoon Blog — a warm and cozy haven for laughs and good company without having to go out to the pub on a cold damp night.

Maybe the 2nd one is too long but I’ll keep thinking (no bother, I’m addicted to it anyway) and maybe I, you, or anyone else may come up with a better one.
