Greenbelt toilets: an official response

I’ve had a very nice comment from someone at Greenbelt about my cartoon booklet and the loos. I thought I’d repost it here so it doesn’t get lost.

Dave,
I’m part of the leadership team for the operations side of greenbelt. Thanks very much for the guide to greenbelt. I loved it. I don’t know if you were aware but copies of your version of the site plan ended up on the wall of several control rooms and operations offices. I saw a load of folk making copies after the booklets ran out.
I am also (sadly) the person responsible for toilets. Just to explain a bit as to why some toilets were locked. Our rental of the buildings for the weekend includes a certain number of toilets and the cleaning of them is included in the price. If we want to have them all open then we will have to pay more rent. We also had a problem over the weekend with vandalism in some of the toilets. This led to some localised flooding and as a result we had to close more toilets. Sorry – but there was no other option.
The number of portaloos provided in the campsite is calculated using a standard formula and we do tend to stick to this number to save money. I like the idea of sponsored toilets. I’ll put it on my list for 06….
Finally, there are some truly lovely (and very clean) toilets in the buildings but we never tell people where they are. It’s a bit like the secret socket. Perhaps we could organise a treasure hunt next year.
Thanks for all your positive words about gb05. I’m glad you had a good time. I did too. See you next year.
Nicky

Thanks Nicky. I’m really glad the guide was enjoyed. As for the toilets, us moaners need to hear the other side of the story, so thank you. See you next year indeed!

I was working at GB this year and as such was on site till late Tuesday afternoon. Lo and behold… the toilets which I already think are the best (apart from the palacial centaur ones – not just the best at GB, but possibly the best in the world – but which really don’t count as they’re just too far away from everything else) were being ripped out for refurbishment. So next year, the best loos become better still. I’m not flaming well telling you where they are though, or everyone will want one. Mwahahahahaha.
