Greenbelt 2005

Back from Greenbelt and have showered, slept and had a little wander round the internet to read other people’s reflections on the festival. I will be posting some photographs of Greenbelt and our Wibsite gathering with some links in the next day or two along with reflections on one or two of the more interesting seminars and events I went to. There are also a lot of reports going up on the different blogs on the Wibsite. But for the time being here are some highlights:

People
Greenbelt is my social highlight of the year I think. As well as our Wibsite friends there were lots of bloggers, old friends from Eastbourne, Moorlands, Ship of Fools people and people I know from who knows where else wandering around. I think heaven will be like Greenbelt, but with better toilets.

Seminars
I went to quite a number of seminars which were on the whole very good. The best were probably James Jones talking about the environment, Steve Tomkins with his fantastic ‘Speed Christianity’ and then Matthew Bishop on Globalisation and ‘the Trade Debate’ which I’m certainly going to be writing more about.

Cartoons
I can’t deny that seeing my ‘Guide to Greenbelt’ booklet in print and being enjoyed by people was rather pleasing. Also the ‘Tree of life’ comic which was handed out to some of the attendees at the Sunday morning communion, though some stewards were only giving out the order of service or only giving the comics to kids so a lot of people were walking in without a comic which was a shame. I have yet to see the other 7 comics in detail as I can’t comment on them, but I saw others enjoying them. The seminar of comics was so-so, but I got to see Si Smith’s ’40′ in full for the first time and thought it was rather splendid.

Blogging
I did enjoy being part of the blogging panel and think I managed to come away from it appearing reasonably coherent. There were a lot of other blogging events – Andrew Jones on ‘The spirituality of blogging’ being a good one. Other technology-related events included a BBC seminar about getting things in the news which was very informative.

Music
I went to see less music than normal. The Proclaimers were fantastic and Duke Special were very good, though the venue manager made a major error by disallowing an encore after the band has promised it. It was the unhappiest I had seen a Greenbelt audience, though when the band came back to do an accoustic encore people soon cheered up.

Toilets and sundry observations
The layout of the site was very different this year and I think it all worked really well. More food outlets meant that queues were down and the new emporium, improved use of the central arena and organic beer tent were all welcome additions.

The supply of toilets is really my only reason for dissatisfaction at the festival. A lot of the obscure ones on the main site are kept locked meaning that there are queues at the well-known ones. A lot only have toilet paper replenished at irregular intervals and on our bit of the campsite their quite simply weren’t enough portaloos. I suppose they cost a lot to hire. Perhaps I should offer to sponsor one extra portaloo in campsite 9.

So all in all a fantastic weekend. Thankyou Greenbelt and all the people who put so much work into the whole enterprise in so many ways.

glad that you liked ’40′ dave!

the ‘tree of life’ comics all went on the day, so maybe they’d run out when you arrived.
i think that at times the stewards maybe just got a bit over-run by the numbers trying to get in, and so trying to hand out service sheets, gift aid envelopes, prayerleafluggagelabels and comics was a bit of a big ask of them… from what we’ve heard so far they were very well received and much approved of in the gb office…

am still chuckling at your guide too – it’s sat here by the computer helping me to fend off the post-festival blues…!

    Hiya,
I too am showered and refreshed after Greenbelt. I loved the Beer tent, nice to be treated like adults and I loved the layout too. Your Guide to Greenbelt was fab, especially as I am part of the unknown youth group that reserved that huge space last year – with the help of an Angel i might add! The kids were delighted to see themselves mentioned, if not by name.

dave, it was fab to meet you. thanks for organising wibmeet. And we loved the comic, and bought a full set!

  4. Dave says:

Si – I was concerned because neither my sister nor I were givan a comic and arrived at different entrances quite early. But if they all went then I clearly had no need to worry.

Wendy – thank you! Actually it wasn’t based upon any particular experience, just the general (understandable) tendency of people to reserve huge amounts of space…

Fishsoup – it was great to meet you too. The Wibmeet really was great – pictures on the way.

    Dave,
I’m part of the leadership team for the operations side of greenbelt. Thanks very much for the guide to greenbelt. I loved it. I don’t know if you were aware but copies of your version of the site plan ended up on the wall of several control rooms and operations offices. I saw a load of folk making copies after the booklets ran out.
I am also (sadly) the person responsible for toilets. Just to explain a bit as to why some toilets were locked. Our rental of the buildings for the weekend includes a certain number of toilets and the cleaning of them is included in the price. If we want to have them all open then we will have to pay more rent. We also had a problem over the weekend with vandalism in some of the toilets. This led to some localised flooding and as a result we had to close more toilets. Sorry – but there was no other option.
The number of portaloos provided in the campsite is calculated using a standard formula and we do tend to stick to this number to save money. I like the idea of sponsored toilets. I’ll put it on my list for 06….
Finally, there are some truly lovely (and very clean) toilets in the buildings but we never tell people where they are. It’s a bit like the secret socket. Perhaps we could organise a treasure hunt next year.
Thanks for all your positive words about gb05. I’m glad you had a good time. I did too. See you next year.
    Nicky

Think I need to be sponsoring a loo on campsite 9 next year as well!

  7. SteveT says:

My personal crisis of the year was waking up on Monday morning after drinking & chatting till 4.30, staying in my sleeping bag till the biologically last possible moment, getting very hurriedly dressed, practically running to the portaloo… and finding a queue of 10 people there.

The story is unpleasant enough already without telling you how I solved my problem.

It was good meeting you and the panel went ok I think (though I dodged the last ten minutes to get to Bill Drummond on time). Your Guide to GB was the thing which made me laugh most often, most loudly, most days of the festival and that was very good, except I’m manager of the Quiet Venue…..
