Today I caught a number 24 bus from the end of my road to Leigh-on-Sea, the cultured end of Southend to take a look at the Leigh-on-Sea Art Trail. It consists of about 50 artists displaying their work in about 40 venues around Leigh and happens for about ten days once a year. I enjoyed a lot of the work, but one or two of those which have stuck in my mind:
Ian James: photos of the estuary. Really clear, fantastic colours. Lots on the website.
Stacey Whitaker: Photographs forming a family album spanning a century. All pictures of her. Again, the whole thing (I think) on the site – click ‘Family Album’ for the piece.
Ed Harper: Everyday rubbish and things you don’t notice. Really clean lines and unusual colouring. The link is a BBC interview.
Simon Hollands. Mixed media pieces involving maps, small plastic models, and lots more you wounldn’t have thought of as art materials. No website unfortunately.
Ian E Smith: Paintings, many of local views. No website again I’m afraid.
Art is alive and well in Essex.
